Russian channels are still available via satellite receivers, which are relatively uncommon in Georgia. The channels cannot be received via cable.
Restrictions on .ru domains, established during the August war, were partially lifted in September, but until now certain Russian news and government sites remained blocked.
The ban was enforced by Georgian authorities during the five-day conflict with Russia in August. However, many Internet users in Georgia managed to reach the blocked Russian pages via proxy servers.
Russia launched its military operation to "force Georgia to accept peace" after Georgian troops attacked breakaway South Ossetia on August 8, killing a number of Russian peacekeepers and hundreds of civilians.
Russia's response to the Georgian attack was labeled disproportionate by a number of Western powers. On August 26, Russia recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states.
