North Korea condemns 'terrorist attack' by U.S. forces in Syria
The Syrian government says four U.S. military helicopters bombed a civilian building on Sunday near the Iraqi border, killing eight people including a father with his four children and one woman.
"The military attack is an unpardonable inhuman criminal act as it is an undisguised infringement upon the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a sovereign state, and state terrorism committed under the pretext of the anti-terrorism war," a North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman was quoted as saying by the official KCNA news agency.
Washington has not officially confirmed or denied the raid. However, anonymous U.S. officials told Western media on Wednesday night that Sunday's operation had targeted the head of a Syrian network responsible for smuggling fighters and weapons into Iraq.
North Korea and Syria have both been branded "rogue states" by the United States and accused of supporting global terrorism. North Korea was removed from Washington's terrorism blacklist earlier this month.
The United States has accused Pyongyang of supplying nuclear technology to Syria. Both North Korea and Syria have denied the allegation.
The North Korean statement conveyed "full support and solidarity to the Syrian government and people in their just efforts and measures to defend the sovereignty and security of the country."
On Wednesday, thousands of people gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Damascus to protest against the U.S. raid. Hundreds of riot police have been sent to guard the building.
