UN aid convoy denied entry to Gaza as Israel keeps border closed

19:17 13/11/2008
GAZA, November 13 (RIA Novosti) - A United Nations mission failed to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip on Thursday as Israel refused to open the crossing into the Hamas-controlled territory, which has been cut off for nine days.

Israel closed its border with Gaza after a violation of a five-month ceasefire by Palestinian militants in response to an Israeli attack, which killed six Palestinians. However, no Israeli casualties or damage were reported.

A spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) said that there would be no distribution of food on Saturday in Gaza as Israel refused to let through a convoy with humanitarian aid.

UNRWA provides food and other humanitarian aid to some 750,000 people in Gaza, which makes up almost a half of the total population, but aid supplies stopped last week.

Israel closed all crossings into Gaza as border violence intensified in a breach of the ceasefire deal. The fuel shortages forced Gaza's sole power plant to shut down on Monday, causing blackouts in Gaza.

Israel resumed limited fuel supplies to the Gaza Strip on Tuesday.
