Abu Dhabi appoints first woman marriage registrar
Fatima Saeed Obeid Al Awani, 33, a mother of two boys, was proposed as "maazoun" at the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) in the capital of Abu Dhabi by the country's justice ministry.
Al Awani, who has a degree in theology from a law faculty, has become the second woman in the Arab world named a religious authority responsible for marriage and divorce, after Egyptian Amal Suleiman.
The appointment is aimed at "bolstering the role of women in society ... in line with Emirati laws and without violating sharia" Muslim law, the WAM news agency said.
In March, Abu Dhabi got its first woman judge and last year also got its first woman Emirati taxi driver, alarabiya.net said.
