BEIJING, December 2 (RIA Novosti) - Eleven girls have died of carbon monoxide poisoning at a secondary school in northwest China after trying to warm up a room, the Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday.
The accident occurred in China's Shaanxi province on Monday night as the girls were "trying to make a fire to keep warm in their room" in the city of Yulin, the news agency said, citing a local official.
Another girl is in a serious condition, Xinhua added. An investigation is underway.
The temperature in the region is currently 13 degrees C (55.4 degrees Fahrenheit) during the day. However, night temperatures can drop to as low as - 2 degrees C (28.4 degrees Fahrenheit). The annual cold snap is expected to hit the country on December 7.
