Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega is to visit Russia on December 18-19, the Kremlin press service announced on Friday.
MOSCOW, December 12 (RIA Novosti) - Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega is to visit Russia on December 18-19, the Kremlin press service announced on Friday.

"High-level talks between Russia and Nicaragua will take place on December 18," the announcement read.

Ortega enjoyed Soviet support in the 1980s after his Sandinista National Liberation Front overthrew the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza in 1979. Ortega was elected president in 1985 and served until 1990. He returned to power after winning presidential elections in late 2006.

On Thursday, Russian Navy spokesman Capt. Igor Dygalo said the destroyer Admiral Chabanenko and two support vessels would arrive on Friday at the Nicaraguan port of Bluefields for a four-day visit.

The Kremlin has recently moved to rebuild old alliances with Cuba and Nicaragua and cultivate new friends such as Venezuela as part of efforts to expand Russia's global clout.

Nicaragua is so far the only country to join Russia in recognizing the disputed Georgian breakaway republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states. Russia and Georgia fought a five-day war over South Ossetia in August after Georgian forces launched an attack on the rebel region.
