According to the poll conducted by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM), Putin is the most popular politician in 2008 among 60% of Russians. The figure has fallen some 10% on 2007 when Putin polled 69%.

In second place with 25% was the country's president Dmitry Medvedev. Trailing with just 4% a piece in third and fourth place were LDPR leader, Vladimir Zhirinovsky and the Communist Party head, Gennady Zyuganov. In fifth place was Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who polled 2%.

Almost half of respondents (48%) named the presidential election as the main domestic event of the year with 23% of Russians pointing to the armed conflict between Russia and Georgia over South Ossetia in second place.

The global financial crisis was voted the main international event of 2008 with 35% of the votes.

In international sports and culture, the main events were Dima Bilan winning the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade and the Summer Olympics in Beijing.
