KABUL, December 24 (RIA Novosti) - International forces in Afghanistan have killed six Taliban militants in Kabul province in an operation against the radical Islamist movement's terrorist network, the U.S. military said in a statement.

"The operation in Sorobi (Sorubi) District, approximately 60 km [37 miles] northeast of Kabul city, targeted a Taliban militant believed to conduct terrorist activities throughout the Kabul, Laghman and Kapisa provinces," Tuesday's statement reads.

Coalition forces also detained three members of the militant cell, which according to ISAF "directed roadside bomb attacks, and moved foreign fighters and weapons into the region."

During the operation, many AK-47 assault rifles and other military equipment were seized and destroyed to prevent further use.

This year has seen the worst violence in Afghanistan since the overthrow of the Islamic Taliban movement in 2001, with the south of the country the worst affected.

On Tuesday, 12 militants were killed in a joint operation by the Afghan army and the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in the southern Helmand province. In the neighboring Kandahar province one Afghan soldier was killed and three injured when a roadside bomb exploded under their armored vehicle.

Two Afghan policemen were killed in a militant attack in the eastern province of Nangarkhar, while five suspected militants have been detained in the neighboring province of Lowgar.

In the central Ghazni province two construction workers, apparently Turkish nationals, have been abducted.
