16:14 24/02/2009
KIEV, February 24 (RIA Novosti) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko is Twittering on the Internet, using the social networking site to tell people what he is up to, the country's UNIAN news agency reported on Tuesday.
The president's press secretary said the main purpose of using Twitter is to allow the Ukrainian president to communicate with the public using today's technology.
Twitter gives each user a home page where they can post short messages of up to 140 characters using the Internet, cell phone text messages, and instant messaging. Anyone can read the posts, which are supposed to answer the question "What are you doing now?"
In mid-2008, some 1 million users had registered with Twitter, including 3,000 Russian speakers.
