The Moldovan Communist Party of President Vladimir Voronin won the country's parliamentary poll and is expected to have the 61 seats necessary to elect a new president, an election official said on Monday.
CHISINAU, April 6 (RIA Novosti) - The Moldovan Communist Party of President Vladimir Voronin won the country's parliamentary poll and is expected to have the 61 seats necessary to elect a new president, an election official said on Monday.

Central Election Commission Secretary Yury Chokan said three opposition parties had cleared the 6% threshold for entry into parliament, while the other 13 groups on Sunday's ballot did not make the cut.

"The Communists have gained 49.91% of votes, the Liberal Party - 12.91%, the Liberal Democratic Party - 12.23%, and the Our Moldova alliance - 9.88%," he said.

The results give the Communists 62 or 63 seats in the new parliament, with 61 votes in the 101-member chamber needed to elect a new president. Voronin has served two terms and must be replaced.

The president said before the election that he planned in the future to work in the new parliament.

The Central Election Commission said 59.49% of the more than 2.6 million eligible voters cast ballots in the elections, monitored by some 5,500 local and international observers.
