Lawyers to appeal Russian 'tug of love' extradition to France
Topic: Irina Belenkaya and the ‘tug-of-love’ case
"There will be no extradition because the defense will file an appeal," spokeswoman Irina Zvonova said, adding that the appeal would be submitted within the next two or three days.
Belenkaya is in detention in Hungary, where she was caught trying to take her daughter Elise Andre across the border into Ukraine. Elise has returned to France with her father, Jean-Michel Andre.
Zvonova said Belenkaya will stay in custody in Budapest until the appeal has been heard.
"The embassy has no idea what steps the Russian authorities and law enforcement agencies will take on the issue," she said.
Russia's Vesti news channel reported that shortly after the court session that Belenkaya had signed an amicable custody agreement with her French husband, which has been drafted by the lawyers.
The agreement, which should lead to the criminal case against Belenkaya being dropped, is yet to be signed by Andre, 51.
The French father said, however, he has not yet seen the final agreement. He has made no comment on Belenkaya's extradition.
"I don't want to talk on this issue now. Let's wait until the details are known. It is important to understand if she has accepted the extradition or rejected it," Andre said.
The couple has been embroiled in a bitter custody battle resulting in Elise being "kidnapped" back and forth three times in the past two years. Andre was awarded custody by a French court after their divorce in 2007.
