BEIJING, May 8 (RIA Novosti) - North Korea announced on Friday it would keep strengthening its nuclear deterrent if the United States did not abandon its hostile policies toward Pyongyang, the Xinhua news agency said.

"Our country would keep bolstering its nuclear deterrent as it had already clarified," a Foreign Ministry spokesman told North Korea's official KCNA news agency, Xinhua reported.

The official condemned the joint U.S.-South Korean exercises in March and insisted that the new U.S. administration made it clear that the U.S. hostile policy toward North Korea remains unchanged.

The reclusive communist regime recently announced it was resuming work at its nuclear facilities that produce weapons-grade plutonium and withdrawing from six-nation talks on Pyongyang controversial nuclear program after the UN Security Council condemned a rocket launch on April 5, which Pyongyang said was carrying a communications satellite.

North Korea also said it would conduct further nuclear tests and rocket launches to ensure its security and defense capability.
