Russia's food safety regulator Rosselkhoznadzor is restricting imports from Japan of pork and pork products that have not undergone special heat treatment, the regulator said Tuesday.

MOSCOW, May 26 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's food safety regulator Rosselkhoznadzor is restricting imports from Japan of pork and pork products that have not undergone special heat treatment, the regulator said Tuesday.

"In connection with the discovery of H1N1 influenza virus human cases in Japan, imports to Russia from the Japanese prefectures of Osaka, Hyogo and Shiga of pigs, pork and processed products that have not undergone thermal treatment are banned until further notice," the regulator said.

The regulator said the minimum temperature required for the treatment of pork products should be 80 degrees Celsius, with the process lasting no less than 30 minutes.

The ban will be effective for products produced and packed after May 20.

According to the World Health Organization's latest update, a total of 12,954 people in 46 countries worldwide have been officially diagnosed with swine flu with a total of 92 deaths.

According to Tuesday's update, 6,764 people have been diagnosed with the swine flu virus in the U.S., with 10 deaths. In Mexico, 4,174 have been diagnosed and 80 have died. In Canada, there have been 921 cases and one death, and in Costa Rica there have been 33 cases with one death.
