CAIRO, June 9 (RIA Novosti) - Egyptian authorities were due on Tuesday to deport eight Russian students held in detention in the northern African country, a spokesman for the Russian Embassy in Cairo said.
Another six Russian students will be deported later.
Early on May 27, Egyptian authorities held a string of raids on apartments rented by foreign students in a Cairo district and arrested about 200 students from different countries, including 34 from Russia, mainly from the North Caucasus.
Most of the detainees have already been released, but many received deportation orders for violating visa regulations.
Although there has been no official statement on the detentions, local media link the actions by Egyptian security agencies with U.S. President Barack Obama's visit to Cairo on June 4, saying security measures were tightened in the days leading up to his arrival.
