Belgium plans early release of 200-300 inmates due to hot weather

BRUSSELS, June 24 (RIA Novosti) - Between 200 and 300 inmates of Belgium prisons will be granted early release due to forecast hot weather that could provoke unrest in prisons, Belgium media reported on Wednesday.

There are currently some 10,500 inmates in Belgium's prisons, which have an official capacity of 8,500.

Fights and quarrels often break out in the prisons during hot weather and inmates often complain about the conditions.

The Belgium authorities also plan to transfer some 500 inmates to prisons in the Netherlands.
