Death toll in Italy railroad blast rises to 16

ROME, July 1 (RIA Novosti) - The death toll in a gas explosion at a railroad station in northern Italy has risen to 17 people after a man died in hospital of multiple burns, the ANSA news agency reported on Wednesday.

A powerful explosion occurred late on Monday in the town of Viareggio when a 14-carriage freight train carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) derailed and two carriages exploded. At least 50 people were also injured.

The blast caused a fireball which engulfed nearby homes, destroying at least two houses.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi cancelled his trip to Libya after the accident. He was due to attend the 13th Assembly of the African Union.
