MOSCOW, July 2 (RIA Novosti) - A U.S. Airways plane en route to Los Angeles was forced to land at an airport in Albuquerque after a passenger stripped off his clothes and began running around the plane naked, U.S. media said.

"He removed his clothing during the flight and refused to put them back on," the Los Angeles Times quoted FBI spokesman Darrin Jones as saying.

He later attacked a flight attendant who tried to cover him with a blanket. The plane's crew then asked two off-duty officers for help.

"We actually had to physically hold him down on the floor and um, handcuff his ankles, his wrists," Matt McGinnis, who, along with two police officers, helped to bring the man under control, told CBS.

The passenger, who was identified as Keith Anthony Wright, 50, from New York, was charged with interference with a flight and is currently being held at an FBI detention center.

Wright claimed he suffered from depression and could not remember anything about the flight.

"He had some alcohol at the origin airport and was on medication but didn't take it and perhaps a combination of not taking medication and perhaps the alcohol and the altitude have impacted his usual behavior," CBS quoted the Albuquerque airport police chief as saying.

The plane, with 147 passengers, continued the flight an hour later.
