Georgia could ban films dubbed into Russian

MOSCOW, June 3 (RIA Novosti) - Georgia's parliament could introduce a ban on all foreign movies being dubbed into Russian, Azerbaijan's Trend News agency reported on Friday citing a top Georgian lawmaker.

The majority of foreign films released in Georgia are dubbed into Russian.

Under the bill, which is to be discussed by the Georgian parliament this fall, all foreign films released in Georgia should be dubbed into Georgian or have Georgian subtitles. Russian films can be shown without a translation.

The chairman of the education, culture and science committee at the Georgian parliament, Giorgi Gabashvili, said foreign films translated into Russian would only be broadcast on Russian-language channels.

He declined to give further details saying that the bill is currently being finalized.

Georgia blocked all Russian-language channels following a five-day conflict with Russia in August 2008, so far only one channel is now operating, others are only available via satellite receivers or cable.
