G8 leaders believe there is little time left for dialogue with Iran over its nuclear program, the Italian prime minister said Friday after a summit in Italy's L'Aquila.

L'AQUILA, July 10 (RIA Novosti) - G8 leaders believe there is little time left for dialogue with Iran over its nuclear program, the Italian prime minister said Friday after a summit in Italy's L'Aquila.

"The G8 summit statement on Iran was tough. We have so far ruled out sanctions, but believe that the period for dialogue cannot be too long," Silvio Berlusconi said at a news conference.

"Iran can't be allowed to use nuclear weapons," he added.

"We're not going to just wait indefinitely," said U.S. President Barack Obama.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that if no progress had been made by a G20 summit set for Pittsburgh on September 24-25, then "we need to take further steps."

Western powers suspect Iran of trying to build a nuclear weapon, while Iran says it needs the program for peaceful power generation.
