MOSCOW, August 11 (RIA Novosti) - At least 87 people were injured when a powerful earthquake, measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale, struck the Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan, Japanese media reported on Tuesday.

Most of the injuries, two seriously, were caused by falling objects. No fatalities have been reported, Kyodo said.

Two nuclear reactors at the Hamaoka plant were automatically suspended after the quake struck, a Chubu Electric representative said.

A Chubu Electric official was cited by Kyodo as saying, "As the reactors were suspended as designed, we see no problems in their quake resistance."

The tremor, early Tuesday, also caused damage to the highway linking Tokyo with Nagoya. Shinkansen bullet train services were also halted for two hours and some local services in Tokyo and Shizuoka were suspended.

Reports that the region could be further hit by Typhoon Etau that earlier killed 13 in western Japan did not materialize when the storm turned away to the east.
