MOSCOW, September 10 (RIA Novosti) - At least five teenagers were crushed to death and 27 others injured when students panicked and rushed out of an Indian school on Thursday after rumors of a threat of electrocution, a national newspaper said.

The students at a government school in East Delhi stampeded after hearing that there was an imminent threat of electrocution on the school premises following heavy rains, The Times of India reported citing television reports.

The paper cited Police Commissioner Dharmendra Kumar as saying, "There was a stampede when some of the children on the first floor were asked to come down. Apparently the staircase was very narrow. Most of the children got stuck there."

He confirmed the number of killed and injured, adding that the 27 injured students, of which 26 are girls, had been hospitalized.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and the local education minister visited the hospital.
