MOSCOW, September 12 (RIA Novosti) - Afghanistan's incumbent leader Hamid Karzai is leading with 54.27% of votes in presidential elections in Afghanistan, after 92,82% of ballots have been counted, the country's electoral authorities said on Saturday.

Karzai has won more than 3 million votes, while his main rival, former foreign minster Abdullah Abdullah, received 1,558 million votes (28,1%).

Presidential and provincial council elections were held in Afghanistan on August 20.

Daud Najafi, a chief electoral officer, said 5,8 million ballots had been counted so far, with over 171,000 of them found to be non-valid. More than 83,000 Afghans voted for those candidates who removed their candidacy shortly before the elections, Najafi said.

He added the election results were canceled at 83 polling stations in Afghanistan's several provinces, with 29,000 ballots found to be non-valid.

Najafi said the Central Election Commission is going to announce the final results of Afghanistan's elections at the next news conference, adding that ballots from some 600 polling stations are currently being checked by the country's electoral authorities.
