NEW YORK, September 16 (RIA Novosti) - The Lost Symbol, Dan Brown's latest novel, broke a one-day sales record for adult fiction in the first 24 hours of its release at stores and online, the world's largest bookseller said.

Barnes & Noble, which runs 774 bookstores in the United States, also said that pre-orders for the book were the highest in the history of the genre on Tuesday, when the book went on sale.

The bookseller said The Lost Symbol was number one in a collection of new titles on Tuesday, which included the late Senator Edward Kennedy's True Compass.

The initial print run of the book is 6.5 million hardback copies.

"Brown may not be much as a conventional novelist, but he knows how to make you keep turning pages," a book review in the Newsweek said.

The Lost Symbol, the author's fifth novel, is a conspiracy thriller and follow-up to the author's giga-seller, The Da Vinci Code.

The novel has the hero, Robert Langdon, summoned to Washington to give a lecture on architectural symbolism and then involved in a 12-hour national security crisis.
