"I am convinced that a firm and collective response to signs of neo-Nazism and attempts to revise the results of World War II enshrined in the UN Charter should remain a priority task for the United Nations," Medvedev said at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly.

NEW YORK, September 24 (RIA Novosti) - The UN should firmly act against the rise of neo-Nazism and attempts to rewrite the results of the WWII, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday.

"I am convinced that a firm and collective response to signs of neo-Nazism and attempts to revise the results of World War II enshrined in the UN Charter should remain a priority task for the United Nations," Medvedev said at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly.

He said that Russia proposes holding a special session on WWII in May to adopt a resolution on the issue.

According to sources in the Russian delegation, Russia is currently preparing a draft resolution on the prevention of Nazi glorification, similar to the one adopted by the UN General Assembly in November 2008.

The war continues to be a contentious issue in Russia's relations with both Estonia and Latvia, over the Baltic States' perceived glorification of Nazi collaborators. Parades in honor of Waffen-SS veterans, involving veterans from the Latvian Legion and the 20th Estonian SS Division and their supporters, are held annually in the two Baltic States.

Another former Soviet republic, Ukraine, holds numerous events to honor the Ukrainian Insurgent Army that fought against the Soviets during WWII, and relations with Poland are also strained over the Katyn massacre and the Soviet takeover of Polish territory at the start of the war.
