NEW DELHI, September 24 (RIA Novosti) - Up to 20 workers died when a 100-meter high chimney, which was under construction, collapsed in central India, national media said on Thursday.
The chimney, part of a power plant, collapsed onto a canteen, where some 300 workers were working at the time on Wednesday evening. At least 20 workers were killed instantly and many more trapped in the debris at the plant in Korba, Chattisgarh State.
Press TV cited a local police source as saying, "We have recovered 20 bodies so far."
The power plant is owned by metal giant Bharat Aluminum Company (Balco). Rescuers are continuing to work at the scene to try and free people trapped under the rubble.
An investigation into the tragedy is ongoing some sources have cited rain and lightning as a possible cause.
