BERLIN, September 27 (RIA Novosti) - Germany will hold parliamentary elections on Sunday, with Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union and foreign minister and deputy chancellor Frank-Walter Steinmeier's center-left Social Democrats being the main rivals.
Merkel, 55, and Steinmeier, 53, on Saturday, the last day of the election campaign, tried to win undecided votes. Opinion polls have showed that the conservatives are slightly ahead of the Social Democrats.
Christian Democrats had 222 seats (36.3%) and Social Democrats 221 seats (36.2%) in the previous parliament, making a "grand" ruling coalition in the Bundestag that has at least 598 seats. In some circumstances, "overhang" seats are also distributed, their number being 13 in the previous parliament.
