Berlin police target Chechen extremists in raids

18:4907/10/2009

MOSCOW, October 7 (RIA Novosti) - Berlin police searched 26 apartments on Wednesday in a series of raids targeting 13 Chechen extremists living in the city's Neukolln and Kreuzberg districts, a police spokesman said.

The searches began early in the morning after investigators received information on planned attacks in Russia.

The German capital has been on high alert since Islamist groups posted threatening videos on the internet ahead of the recent elections. The videos warned voters against voting for leaders who would support U.S.-led military operations in Afghanistan.

Officials say there is no connection between today's raids and the videos.

Bild newspaper said that after searching flats, Police arrested several Chechens but later released them.
