© RIA Novosti.MEXICO CITY, October 21 (RIA Novosti) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has closed nine popular golf courses in the country in the past three years, the head of the country's Golf Federation said.
"We have received an order from the Venezuelan authorities to close another two golf courses in the resort site of Caraballeda. We have lost nine golf clubs in the past three years," Julio Torres was quoted as saying by Mexican media.
Chavez is known to have a disliking for sports not popular with workers.
"Golf is a bourgeois game," he once said during his Sunday TV program, Hello President, also accusing golf players of being lazy because they use golf carts to carry their golf clubs.
