CAIRO, October 25 (RIA Novosti) - At least 25 people were killed and 55 injured in a deadly collision between two trains near the Egyptian capital, Cairo, local media reported on Saturday.

According to the Nile News television, the accident took place late on Saturday in Al-Ayyat area of Giza, 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Cairo, when one of the trains, traveling on the same track, stopped unexpectedly and the other one ran into it from behind without even attempting to brake.

Earlier reports indicated at least 15 killed and 24 injured in the deadly train crash.

The authorities have launched an investigation into the causes of the tragedy, while rescue workers continued to extract more people from the derailed carriages.

At least 58 people were killed and 144 injured in August 2006 when a passenger train slammed into the back of another, also near Cairo, derailing carriages and setting one train ablaze.

Egypt's worst railroad disaster occurred seven years ago, in February 2002, when a passenger using a stove set a train on fire, killing over 360 people.
