MOSCOW, November 5 (RIA Novosti) - At least 99 people have been killed and another 22 have gone missing since a powerful storm hit central Vietnam earlier this week, Al Jazeera said on Thursday.
Typhoon Mirinae inundated nine provinces of the Southeast Asian country on Monday, destroying hundreds of homes and displacing thousands in a region that was swept by another typhoon, Ketsana, over a month ago, Al Jazeera said.
The news agency quoted a UN report based on official data from Vietnam saying that Mirinae had destroyed 900 homes and damaged more than 14,000 others and left some 18,000 hectares of rice land flooded.
The country's authorities have stepped up rescue operations, with soldiers distributing instant noodles, water and other relief supplies to victims in flooded areas and military helicopters dropping food in more isolated areas.
Before hitting Vietnam, Mirinae left at least 16 people dead and several more missing in the Philippines last weekend.
