MOSCOW, November 11 (RIA Novosti) - Robert Enke, a goalkeeper for Germany's national football team, died late on Tuesday after jumping from a rail bridge and being hit by a train near his home in Hanover.
A close friend confirmed that Enke committed suicide.
"Robert took his own life shortly before six o'clock. A press conference in Hanover on Wednesday will reveal more details," Jorg Neblung told journalists.
The 32-year-old Hanover 96 player, who was expected to play for his country at the World Cup next summer, lost his two-year-old daughter to a rare heart condition three years ago, and had reportedly shown recent signs of instability.
After jumping from the bridge at a railway crossing in Neustadt am Rubenberge, he was hit by a Norddeich-Hanover train and died at the scene, police said. The train drivers had seen the man on the tracks, but were unable to stop in time.
Enke's car was found unlocked nearby with his wallet on the seat.
He had missed Germany's last three World Cup qualifiers due to a stomach infection, but played for Hannover 96 last weekend.
