MOSCOW, November 15 (RIA Novosti) - A suicide bomber detonated a car bomb near a police checkpoint in the outskirts of Peshavar in north-western Pakistan killing at least 11 people and wounding 26 others, Al Jazeera reported.

The attack occurred late on Saturday when a driver of a suspiciously-looking car set off explosives after police asked him to show his ID papers.

Two police officers, four children and several women were among the dead, local police reported.

Local Taliban leader Qari Hussain Mehsud took responsibility for the attack saying suicide bombings "aimed at weakening the government's resolve to continue its military operation against Taliban near the Afghan border will continue."

Taliban militants have struck numerous times in Pakistan in recent weeks, killing over 300 civilians and soldiers.

A truck bombing at the regional headquarters of Pakistan's national intelligence agency killed at least 10 people in Peshawar on Friday.

At least 30 people were killed and more than 40 others injured on Tuesday in a car bomb explosion in the northwest Pakistani city of Charsadda.

The area separating Pakistan and Afghanistan has been a stronghold for Taliban radicals who fled Afghanistan after the U.S.-led invasion toppled the Taliban regime there in 2001.
