MOSCOW, November 16 (RIA Novosti) - At least three people died and around two dozen were injured when a bomb exploded outside a police station near Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar on Monday, Al Jazeera reported.

"Three people were killed and more than 20 are injured," Sahib Zada Anis, head of the northwestern city's administration, was quoted by the TV channel as saying.

The attack is believed to have been carried out by a suicide bomber.

Witnesses were quoted by Al Jazeera as saying the explosion, close to a Pakistani air force base, damaged the police station, a mosque and nearby shops.

Taliban militants have struck numerous times in Pakistan in recent weeks, killing over 300 civilians and soldiers.

A suicide bomber detonated a car bomb near a police checkpoint in the outskirts of Peshawar on Saturday, killing at least 11 people and wounding 26 others.

A truck bombing at the regional headquarters of Pakistan's national intelligence agency killed at least 10 people in Peshawar on Friday.

At least 30 people were killed and more than 40 others injured on Tuesday in a car bomb explosion in the northwest Pakistani city of Charsadda.

The area separating Pakistan and Afghanistan has been a stronghold for Taliban radicals who fled Afghanistan after the U.S.-led invasion toppled the Taliban regime there in 2001.
