Over 3,000 observers to monitor Honduras elections

Over 3,000 observers to monitor Honduras elections
10:37 27/11/2009

A total of 3,000 Honduran and over 300 international observers will monitor the November 29 presidential elections in Honduras, the country's Supreme Electoral Tribunal has said.

International monitors will include EU observers, U.S. representatives of the Democrat and Republican parties and Organization of American States officials. A government delegation from Panama is also due to monitor the polls.

Liberal Party candidate Elvin Santos and Porfirio Lobo, the National Party's presidential candidate, are the leading contenders.

Santos was vice-president under ousted Honduran leader Manuel Zelaya, who was deported from Honduras on June 28 by the military, acting on instructions from the Supreme Court and parliament, over efforts to seek an unconstitutional second presidential term.

Regional media reported on Thursday that the Honduras Supreme Court had dismissed Zelaya's claim for reinstatement. The court found that the charges against Zelaya that led to his forced exile were based in law.
