Serbian President Boris Tadic admitted to a Belgrade court on Tuesday that he had drunk champagne at a football stadium, the Tanjug news agency said.

The Serbian president broke the law by drinking champagne at the Red Star Belgrade stadium after Serbia defeated Romania 5-0 in a World Cup 2010 qualifying match on October 10.

He was charged under anti-hooligan laws.

"I did not know that drinking alcohol, even if it is only a toast to somebody's health, is prohibited, and I completely accept my responsibility for the committed infringement," Tadic was quoted by the news agency as saying.

The president added he was ready to pay a fine if found guilty.

According to the news agency, Serbian law stipulates a fine up to 50,000 dinars (more than 530 euros) or a prison term up to 60 days for such violations.
