Afghan police arrested on Monday Kabul's mayor, Abdul Ahad Sahebi, following a court ruling, Kabul's police chief told RIA Novosti.

"Police detained the mayor of Kabul - he will be jailed," Abdul Rahman Rahman said.

The development follows a secret investigation by the Prosecutor General's Office into corruption allegations. Sahebi is alleged to have received a $10,600 bribe for setting up a contract on paving Kabul's city streets, as well as allegedly skimming funds from the project

Sahebi was sentenced to four years in a court hearing he did not attend.

Several months ago, one of Kabul's vice-mayors was arrested on suspicion of using administrative resources in a property dispute.

After Afghan President Hamid Karzai took office on November 19, he pledged his new administration would begin a fight against corruption. Karzai himself came to power in polls that saw his only challenger pull out of the race over allegations that the elections were fixed in favor of the president.

Since the president's statement, the Afghan administration has said 15 corruption cases have been launched against high-up government officials.
