The Palestinian prime minister praised on Wednesday a recent EU resolution that says that Jerusalem should be the shared capital of the both Israel and a future Palestinian state.
The 27 EU foreign ministers on Tuesday adopted the resolution, which calls for "negotiations to resolve the status of Jerusalem as the future capital of two states," following a week of intensive deliberations.
"The EU stance is an important step towards the international community's acceptance of direct responsibility for halting the occupation of all Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem," Salam Fayyad said, adding that the resolution was "a triumph of the rule of law."
The Palestinian premier also thanked the EU for condemning Israeli settlement activity and calling on it to lift the Gaza blockade.
Authorities in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip said the EU statement did not respond to the expectations of the Palestinian people.
A Swedish version of the draft resolution, which stated that east Jerusalem should be the capital of a Palestinian state, was rejected following strong objections from Israel.
