The settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict currently requires both sides to make concessions, which are almost impossible in practice, a report prepared for an international Middle East conference in Jordan said.

An analytical report on the future situation in the Middle East, prepared by a group of Russian experts for a regional security conference currently underway in Jordan, says the traditional peace settlement forms are sputtering, while alternative solutions are either ineffective or impossible in practice.

"The two-state solution, which is still seen as a main objective of the Middle East process, under the current circumstances requires both sides to make concessions, almost impossible in practice," the report says.

Regular outbreaks of violence and a split in the Palestinian society which weakened moderate forces are seen as some of the causes of the stalemate.

In addition, the rise to power of a right coalition in Israel and the ongoing Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank also hampers the return of the sides to negotiation table, the report says.

The international conference on Middle East regional security opened in Jordan this weekend. It was organized by the Russian News & Information Agency RIA Novosti and the Russian Council for Foreign and Defense Policy within the framework of the Valdai International Discussion Club.
