The Polish parliament has passed a more restrictive law on drunk driving, national media reported Friday.

Under the new regulations, an intoxicated driver who causes a fatal accident may lose his driving license forever, Polish Radio said. Those who are caught driving under the influence of alcohol more than once will be sentenced from three months to five years.

MPs also decided to establish a fund for road accident victims, who will be able to get professional psychological, social and legal aid.

According to the latest report, Poland is also the EU's most dangerous country for cyclists with four times as many bikers dying in accidents on Polish roads than anywhere else in the 27-member bloc.

Around 500 cyclists are killed on Polish roads every year with another 5,000 injured.

Contrary to a common misperception, the agency said, the majority of those victims were not those cycling under the influence of alcohol or on improperly lit bikes but children and the elderly who were killed on new or newly modernized roads.

Biking organizations cite the behavior of car drivers and unclear laws among the reasons for such grim statistics.
