A new earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit Haiti on Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It said the quake hit at 6:03 a.m. (11.03 GMT) about 60 kilometers northwest of the capital of Port-au-Prince.

According to AP, the quake shook buildings and sent people screaming and running into the streets just eight days after the country's capital was devastated by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake.

Fearing aftershocks, thousands of people have been sleeping in streets since the January 12 quake.

While the death toll is not yet known, there are fears that up to 200,000 people may have lost their lives.

Russia confirmed that its first emergencies services plane would leave the devastated island nation in the early hours of Thursday but the mobile hospital would stay in Haiti.

Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday it would have enough supplies and equipment to operate for another 15 days.

It was not immediately clear how the latest earthquake would affect the Russian emergency services plans.

Russian doctors in Haiti have treated more than 100 earthquake survivors in the past few days.
