The number of UN personnel killed in the deadly quake in Haiti has reached 84, while another 15 people remained unaccounted for, the UN has said on its website.
The UN Headquarters in the Christopher Hotel was leveled in the quake which devastated Port-au-Prince on January 12. The head of the UN mission to Haiti, Hedi Annabi of Tunisia, his Brazilian deputy, Luiz Carlos da Costa and Police Commissioner Doug Coats of Canada were among the dead.
"The toll... comprises 40 civilian staff who worked for the peacekeeping mission (known as MINUSTAH), 24 military staff and 18 UN police officers. A World Food Programme (WFP) staffer and a UN Volunteer (UNV) are also confirmed to have been killed," the UN said on Friday.
The number of missing has fallen sharply in the past few days as communications have improved, allowing more people to contact with the UN.
Dozens of other UN staff members were hospitalized or injured as a result of the disaster, the overall number is unknown.
The overall number of dead ranges up to 200,000, and more than 3 million are estimated to have been left without shelter. Eight Russian peacekeepers from the UN mission in Haiti were not injured.
