Georgian Winter Olympic luger Nodar Kumaritashvili died on Friday in Vancouver after a crash during training on Friday, IOC officials said.
He was taken to hospital with blood pouring from a head wound after trackside emergency treatment, but doctors were unable to save his life.
Several other lugers crashed at the site on Friday during training, which has seen speeds in excess of 90 mph.
The Winter Olympic Games begin later on Friday.
