Russian President Dmitry Medvedev expressed on Saturday his condolences over the collapse of a minaret in Morocco in which at least 41 people died.

The 400-year-old minaret came down during Friday prayers at the Bab al-Baradeen mosque in Meknes, a town in northern Morocco. Another 17 people were hospitalized.

"I ask you to pass on my sincere condolences... to the family and friends of the dead," Medvedev said in a telegram to Morocco's King Mohammed VI.

Reports have blamed heavy rains for the collapse.
