India's new Advanced Air Defense (AAD) interceptor missile, capable of destroying hostile missiles, failed to launch on Monday during a planned test at a firing range off Orissa coast, Indian media reported.

"Coordinated exercise between target missile Prithvi from Chandipur [test range] and the indigenously built interceptor from Wheeler Island could not take place properly during the planned trial," The Times of India quoted defense sources as saying.

Although the Prithvi target missile was successfully test-fired from a mobile launcher, the interceptor missile failed to launch, the defense sources told the paper.

The exact reason for the interceptor missile's failure has yet to be established but preliminary analysis suggested that the target missile might have deviated from its projected trajectory resulting in the lack of proper coordination, the paper said.

The trial was aimed at developing India's multi-layer Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) system, the paper said.
