French President Nicolas Sarkozy and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon discussed the controversial Iranian nuclear program during talks in the UN headquarters, the United Nations press service said.

The French president is visiting the United States and on Tuesday is due to arrive in Washington to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama.

Iran's recent move to begin enriching uranium to 20% sparked a wave of international criticism, with the United States leading calls for new harsher sanctions against the Islamic Republic. Western powers suspect that Iran's nuclear program is aimed at making weapons, while Tehran claims it is pursuing nuclear technology for its civilian energy needs.

It was not specified which Iranian issues Sarkozy and Ban discussed in particular.

Earlier in the month, the Iran Six discussed a possible new UN Security Council resolution that imposes further sanctions against Tehran over its controversial nuclear program. The six countries, including the United States, France, Britain, Germany, China and Russia, comprise a group of international mediators negotiating with Iran on its nuclear program.

Apart from Iranian problem, Sarkozy and Ban discussed Haitian issues ahead of the forthcoming UN international conference on aid to the country where a recent earthquake claimed up to 230,000 lives.
