The younger son of the ousted Kyrgyz president Kurmanbek Bakiyev is suspected of embezzling millions of dollars of a loan from Russia, a Kyrgyz Prosecutor's General official said on Friday.

The spokesman said Maxim Bakiyev had placed $35 million of a $300 million loan from Russia into his private bank accounts while chairman of the board of directors at the Kyrgyz Development Fund.

The ousted president is currently in Kazakhstan. He is insisting on amnesty for his himself and his family members as a condition for his resignation.

Earlier on Friday, head of the Kyrgyz interim government, Roza Otunbayeva showed journalists a copy of a fax that she claimed was a resignation letter written by Bakiyev.

But Bakiyev has not officially announced his resignation. His brother, Akhmad Bakiyev, said the document was a fake.

"The issue of his resignation has not yet been raised," he said.
