The Pakistani authorities have blocked access to the popular website YouTube over its "growing sacrilegious content," national media said on Thursday, citing officials.

Officials did not specify what material had caused the ban.

The move came just a day after the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority shut down Facebook until May 31 for hosting a contest to create caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.

The page "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!" sparked protests in Pakistan's biggest city Karachi. Protesters demanded that all websites containing un-Islamic material should be shut down.

The Pakistani regulator said it had failed to persuade Facebook to remove the material from the site.

Islam prohibits any visual depictions of the Prophet Mohammed . In 2005, Muslims around the world staged protests following the publication of cartoons of the prophet in a Danish newspaper.
