At least 160 people have been confirmed dead following a crash of an Air India Express plane at the airport in India's southern port of Mangalore, CNN said.

V.S. Acharya, the home minister of India's Karnataka state, told the TV channel he thought about five or six people had survived the crash.

The Boeing 737 plane coming from Dubai overshot the runway while landing and was engulfed in flames.

The contact with the aircraft was reportedly lost at around 6.30am local time as the left wing of the plane caught fire.

The Daily Mail quoted reports on local TV as saying the pilot did not "report any malfunction or ask for priority landing" when he called for clearance to land.

Reports differ on the number of passengers on board the plane. Some reports say there were 169 people on board, while other put the figure at 163.
