The Israeli military currently studies the possibility of allowing humanitarian aid ships to the Gaza Strip in the future after they undergo a security check in the port of Ashdod, the Jerusalem Post said on Sunday.

Calls to lift Israel's blockade of the Palestinian enclave renewed after Israel intercepted an international aid convoy in the neutral waters in the Mediterranean Sea, killing at least nine pro-Palestinian activists.

Israel has refused so far to lift the blockade, saying it is "an act of self-defense in the face of Hamas' continuing aggression."

Senior diplomatic sources told the Jerusalem Post on Saturday night that "nothing has been decided" on allowing aid ships to Gaza, but "there are a lot of ideas out there."

The sources stressed, however, that no unchecked cargo will be allowed to Gaza to ensure that there was no weapons onboard.

Israeli commandos stormed the six-ship Freedom Flotilla off the Gaza coast on Monday as it carried some 10,000 tons of aid and up to 700 human rights activists to the Palestinian enclave.

Official Israeli reports said nine people were killed, however, Arab media reports put the death toll at close to 20.

The international community strongly criticized the Israel's attack. Protests against the siege of the crew took place outside Israeli embassies in many other world capitals following the incident.
