UN sanctions against Iran won't harm Russian interests - Lavrov

Russia's interests will be almost unaffected by new UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, the Russian foreign minister said Thursday.

Sergei Lavrov also said Russian companies would have to "adapt" to the new sanctions.

The United Nations Security Council approved on Wednesday a new package of economic sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

The fourth round of sanctions will include tougher financial controls and an expanded arms embargo. They also impose an asset ban and a travel freeze on more than three dozen companies and individuals.

Lavrov said Russia would ensure "absolute protection for all significant channels of trade and economic cooperation existing between Russia and Iran."

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said earlier on Thursday the delivery of Russian S-300 surface-to-air missile systems to Iran will not be hit by the UN resolution.

Lavrov said Russia will also continue to cooperate with Iran on the Islamic Republic's first nuclear power plant.
